Should I See My Pet After They’ve Passed?
A gentle, honest guide to help you decide what feels right for you and your family.

In short
- There is no right or wrong choice. Both are acts of love.
- Many families find that a final moment together brings peace and closure.
- If you are unsure, you can talk it through with our team first, with no pressure.
“There is no wrong way to love them goodbye.”
When a pet passes, one of the first questions many families face is a quiet but heavy one: should I see my pet after death? Some people know straight away. Others feel torn between wanting one more moment and worrying that it will be too hard.
If you are asking yourself this question, please know that whatever you decide is okay. This guide gently walks through what other families have found helpful, so you can make the choice that feels right for you.
Two Paths, Both Full of Love
Every family is different. Here are some of the reasons people choose each path.
Why some families choose to see their pet
- To say the words they did not get to say
- To see that their pet is finally peaceful and free of pain
- To help the reality of the loss settle more gently
- To give children or relatives a chance to say goodbye
- To leave with a calm final memory instead of a hurried one
Why some families prefer not to
- They want to remember their pet full of life at home
- They have already said a meaningful goodbye
- It feels too overwhelming right now
- Their culture or beliefs guide a different farewell
- They would rather honour their pet with a keepsake or memorial

What Your Pet Will Look Like
It is natural to worry about what you will see. At Pure Souls, your pet is gently prepared before you arrive. They rest on a soft, raised bed, often wrapped in a blanket, looking calm and peaceful.
A few small things are normal and nothing to be alarmed by:
- Their eyes may stay slightly open
- Their body will feel cool and still to the touch
- Their fur may feel a little different
Our team is always nearby if you have questions, and you are welcome to pause at any time.

If You Choose to Say Goodbye
A private pet viewing in The Angel Area gives you a calm, private space to be with your pet one last time.
- 30 minutes for $150, or 45 minutes for $180
- Candles, flowers and glowing angel wings
- Up to four family members together
- A keepsake token to take home
You can also bring their favourite blanket or toy, or a letter you would like to read to them.
