The process uses 95% water, 5% potassium salts, precise temperature control and gentle water flow to delicately reduce tissue at a molecular level through a chemical reaction called Alkaline hydrolysis.

Water cremation, scientifically known as alkaline hydrolysis is a chemical reaction called hydrolysis. In simple terms, hydrolysis is the breaking down of a compound due to its reaction with water. In this process, a mixture of 95% water and 5% alkaline chemical (such as potassium hydroxide) is used. The alkaline environment accelerates the breakdown of biological materials like proteins, fats, and nucleic acids, effectively ‘dissolving’ soft tissues. The body’s proteins break down into smaller peptides and amino acids, and the fat tissues saponify, or turn into soap, which then dissolves in the water. The elevated temperature further accelerates the hydrolysis of cell membranes, cell walls, and connective tissues, reducing the body to its basic components. After 16 to 18 hours, two components remain: a sterile liquid containing amino acids, peptides, sugars, and salts which can be safely disposed of or used as fertiliser, and clean, intact bones composed primarily of calcium phosphate.

Hydrolysis is a biological process where water molecules break down other large molecules into smaller components, allowing them to be reused, reabsorbed, or recycled, just like nature intended offering a more gentle alternative for cremating pets.

Yes, the alkali used in water cremations is completely safe. It’s the same type of alkali found in everyday items like cosmetics, body washes, shaving creams, and even food processing.  Aqua cremation, we use a controlled amount of alkali, with only 5% alkali mixed with 95% water. This carefully balanced solution breaks down tissue while eliminating harmful bacteria, viruses, and even neutralizing chemotherapy and euthanasia drugs.

Aqua cremation is performed in a clean stainless-steel vessel, which has individual compartments to ensure that each pet is respectfully cared for. Your pet is carefully placed inside one of these compartments, which has tiny perforations on the top and bottom to allow the gentle movement of water through. Please note that personal items like collars, blankets, or toys cannot be placed inside the vessel. Unless specified otherwise, these items will be removed and either disposed of or donated to a local animal shelter.
Indeed, families receive a fine off-white powder in the form of pure calcium phosphate, the inorganic mineral that serves as the primary component of our bones. In contrast to traditional cremation, where fire burns through everything, resulting in a grey ash residue, our gentle water-based process cleanses and sterilizes your pet’s bones. Flame cremation takes place at temperatures ranging from 800-1200°C, with the remains coming into direct contact with the open flame. As a result, some of the remains are released into the air through the exhaust stack. In contrast, the Aqua cremation process operates at a much lower temperature of 90°C, entirely without the use of fire. The circulation of water in the system mimics the flow found in a natural creek or stream, making it exceptionally gentle on the final mineral remains. This gentleness preserves a larger proportion of the ashes, resulting in 20% more ashes at the end of the process.
Absolutely not. As with anything, toxicity of a substance is a function of concentration. A daily multivitamin is not toxic when taken as directed, but it would be toxic (and likely deadly) if the whole bottle were to be taken. When spreading or scattering ashes, we need to pay mind to where we are scattering them. A cremation garden that allows the scattering of ashes from hundreds of individuals can be a tough environment for growing plants. For families wanting to use the ashes from Aquacremation or flame cremation as part of a potting soil, allowing their loved one to live on through the plant, the ashes are certainly not toxic if the soil is properly prepared. Significantly diluting the calcium phosphate ashes with potting soil and a pH balancer to match your region and specific plant type makes the ashes beneficial to the plant instead of potentially toxic.
The remaining water is not only benign, but beneficial. It can be used as a rich, organic fertilizer or can be disposed to sewer after neutralizing the PH.
Unfortunately, it can be dangerous for other pets and wildlife. Most pets are put to sleep with an extremely concentrated anesthetic agent, AKA euthanasia. This drug, pentobarbital, persists in the buried body of the pet for up to a year. Any animal scavenging on the remains will be poisoned by the euthanasia solution. If your pet dies of a disease which could be spread to other animals or even people, their body might also pose a risk.
